Engagement Campaign
Costco

UPDATE August 13, 2024

Nearly 6,000 members, plus 2,000 additional investors and concerned citizens, have now signed our petition calling on the company to not sell the abortion drug mifepristone.  What started out as a simple petition has now gathered significant momentum.  Inspire Investing took the lead to mobilize asset managers, investors, and others in the financial industry to send letters to company leadership at Costco, Walmart, Kroger, Albertsons, and McKesson after NYC comptroller, Brad Lander, pressed the companies in July to dispense the abortion drug.  Our initiative has generated significant press coverage which you can read about here and at the links below.  We sincerely THANK YOU for all of your support as we would not have been able to do this important work without you!

Together our voices cannot be ignored and can turn the tide. Please join us in this effort to keep abortion drugs out of these retailers.

Thank you for standing with us to protect women and unborn children!

HOW YOU CAN HELP NOW

Although the support we have received has been overwhelming, unfortunately Costco and the other retailers have yet to respond to our letters.  Therefore, we are asking for your help again to let your voice be heard! Please take a moment to click on the link below to send an email directly to the CEO of Costco, Ron Vachris, and to Richard Stephens, Senior VP of Pharmacy, the individual directly responsible for making the decision on mifepristone.  You can use our pre-filled language, or better yet, edit the form to create a personalized message of your own.  In addition, you can call Mr. Stephens’ office at 425-313-6925.  If you would like to reach out to the other retailers as well, we have provided their direct contacts here.  Please be as respectful as possible in your communication with these companies!

Together our voices cannot be ignored and can turn the tide. Please join us in this effort to keep abortion drugs out of these retailers.

Thank you for standing with us to protect women and unborn children!

Subject:
I do not support Costco selling the abortion drug, mifepristone

Message:
Dear Messrs. Vachris and Stephens,

As a Costco member, investor, and concerned citizen, I am writing to urge you to continue your current practice of not dispensing the abortion drug mifepristone. Grocery stores and other retailers that turn their pharmacies into abortion dispensaries inject themselves into an ongoing political battle, introduce serious legal and brand-reputation risk, jeopardize the health of pregnant mothers, and provide no real economic benefit to their shareholders.

Entering the abortion drug marketplace is an inescapably political decision. This is very similar to what happened to Bud Light (InBev), Disney, and Target. All three have taken affirmative stances on controversial issues in recent years and have yet to recover from the backlash.  Costco needs to continue providing excellent products and service to American families, and not get involved in divisive political issues that only have the potential to hurt your company’s profitability.

Selling abortion drugs injects grocery stores and other retailers into an unsettled, ongoing legal battle that is fraught with risk.  While the FDA recently managed to temporarily avoid accountability for endangering women’s health on a legal technicality at the U.S. Supreme Court, the legal landscape for abortion drugs is anything but settled. For example three states (Missouri, Kansas, and Idaho) have already intervened in the lower court and stand ready to raise further questions about the chemical abortion drug.

Retail pharmacies are there to serve the health and wellness of their customers, but abortion drugs like mifepristone undermine that mission by putting women’s health at risk.  Abortion advocates contradict the FDA’s warnings about mifepristone. Advocates claim that Mifepristone has a safety profile comparable to that of ibuprofen, but the FDA’s label says that roughly 1 in 25 women who take this drug will end up in the emergency room.

Selling chemical abortion drugs undermines a retail pharmacy’s bottom line. According to company statements, Costco’s product focus is on high sales volume items with rapid inventory turnover. By your company’s own admission, mifepristone is not a high demand product and, therefore, does not fit within the company’s product focus.  In addition, instead of selling a lifetime supply of everyday goods like diapers, cough syrup, groceries, toys, food, and clothing, a store settles for a one-time purchase that ends a life in the name of “health and wellness. Costco can and should do better than settling for fool’s gold.

There is no compelling reason for Costco to sell the abortion drug mifepristone.  If the company should decide to cave to political pressure and sell the abortion drug, I intend to end my patronage with the company.

Thank you for making the right decision on this important issue.
