Inspire Expands Pornography Screening Category

Inspire strives to consistently uphold its role as a leader in Biblically Responsible Investing by prioritizing integrity, transparency, and excellence. A vital aspect of this commitment is our ongoing dedication to prayerfully stewarding screening categories that align with biblical principles. This mission is further reinforced by our emphasis on objective, reliable, and trustworthy data to guide biblically sound investment decisions.

As a result of this value and mission, Inspire has decided to enhance the screening category name and definition of “Pornography” effective April 1st, 2025. This category, currently defined as:

“Companies that produce or distribute pornography. This category includes all media types, such as film, print, and online. Also included are companies that produce AO (Adult Only) rated video games that contain pornographic content”, will undergo the category name and definition change to “Sexually Explicit,” now defined as

“Companies that derive revenue from the creation, sale, or distribution of sexually explicit content and/or services. This category seeks to cover media types, such as film, print, gaming, and online that contain pornographic content, including platforms that stream movies rated for nudity and/or sex, and other explicit depictions of sex, such as audio pornography or animated sex/nudity. Also included are companies that profit from sexually immoral services, such as strip clubs and LGBT dating services, that actively promote and profit from unbiblical sexual behavior.”

This change, while still retaining the underlying spirit of the category without diminishing the Biblical value it was originally built on, allows us to expand our research and capture violators who may have been able to pass under the restrictive term “pornography.” In many situations, the term pornography has been used to simply categorize explicit (or hard-core) sexual acts, while lighter labels like “erotica” or “soft-core porn” have been mainstreamed but would still fall within our biblically based violation.

Additionally, this change will allow us to screen companies that promote an unbiblical sexual lifestyle. For example, Grindr (GRND) uses its platform to promote LGBT-based sexual encounters and appears to normalize a sexually explicit lifestyle in its marketing. Thus, this is not so much a change to a category but an expansion of the types of companies we are able to screen for and provide more consistent, objective, and biblically aligned data to aid in wise investment decisions and advice.

We are blessed and excited to continue to inspire transformation for God’s glory through this refinement and pray that it will further assist in empowering Christians to invest for the glory of God.
